It's election day and I wanted to watch something that would take me out of this world (DO YOU GET IT??) rather than sit and watch election coverage. My knowledge of this movie beforehand was absolutely nothing. I'd never heard of it or had any idea about what it was.
I picked this movie because it had Pedro Pascal and it was sci-fi. There was no greater reason than that. The blurb about it didn't really sound that interesting, but I figured it couldn't be that bad. Very shortly, this movie is about people on another planet doing stuff! Aren't you glad I'm here to tell you about it?
The cast in this movie is great. It starts with Jay Duplass and Sophie Thatcher, who I had never heard of. She must've been 17 or 18 when they filmed this, but she was pretty solid in her role. Jay Duplass is more recognizable to me (and always makes me think of his brother + The League). Before you know it, old Pedro is on-screen. From there, you'll meet a cast of characters that you're probably at least somewhat familiar with, but if I give too much detail it might spoil stuff so I'll leave it at that.
This is a character-driven movie, so pacing fits with that. It's not slow, but it's not a fast-paced action romp either. The runtime is 100 minutes, which is probably as long as it could've been and still had the same effect. I was never bored during it, so that's a positive.
And given that it's a character-driven movie with good actors, the story itself doesn't really matter ALL that much to me. It's not what I would call all that unique, but it worked and I enjoyed it. I had ideas of what would happen, but the characters played off each other well enough that it didn't matter. This isn't a mystery that needs to be thought out.
Recommended?
Sure, it's nothing groundbreaking (and it's pretty easy to overlook considering I hadn't heard of it even once in the 6 years before watching it), but it's a solid movie. The sci-fi is secondary and that's ok.
