I've seen this movie many times, but the last time? I was probably like.. 12. Maybe even younger if I'm being honest. That was the early 90s. Think about that. But hey, I remember liking it and so WHY NOT BUY IT ON BLURAY!?
The cast in this movie is funny. You've got Mr. T, Gary Busey, Marsha Warfield, Paul Rodriguez, Bill Maher, and even Irene Cara playing herself! All of these characters have a LOT of personality. It's a very 80s feeling movie because of the array of characters they have. Gary Busey is in full Busey in this movie and I'm ok with it.
The weirdest part of this movie is that it's kind of like 2 movies in 1. Or at least 2 stories that happen one after the other. You don't usually see that in a narrative. The first, what, 70%? is an underdog story where they start to come up. The last 30% is a kidnapping movie where they go all vigilante. Sounds weird doesn't it? WELL IT IS. But it somehow works.
I do think this movie could've used some more cuts. It comes in at right under 1 hour and 40 minutes. That's too long for a goofy comedy like this. And because they have the 2-in-1 story, there's a lot of relationships that remain underdeveloped. I liked Ophelia but she didn't get enough screen time. Dell was bizarre but a good comic relief. Tyrone was confusing and seemed like he could've used more fleshing out. And the whole kidnapping thing resolves VERY quickly. When you see that this is a Joel Schumacher movie, you get even more confused. This is the same dude who brought us St. Elmo's Fire, The Lost Boys, Phone Booth, Batman & Robin, 8mm, and that Phantom of the Opera with Emmy Rossum. Quite a collection of movies if you ask me. D.C. Cab doesn't fit in AT ALL.
Recommended?
It's tough to recommend this movie. I think I like it more for the nostalgia (and memories of the Venus Club as a young lad) than anything it actually does on the screen.
