Let me take you back to the night of my graduation party where my then-girlfriend and I went to see this movie in theaters. I, a young lad who loved Nicole Kidman, got to witness this surreal and bombastic little musical in its most glorious form. Now, I want to make it clear that I am not a fan of theaters most of the time. Something about this movie, though, really made it shine in theaters. I think I bought it on VHS when it came out. Then again on DVD when those became more popular. I've seen it so many times, it's kind of silly.
But the gap between me seeing it THEN and NOW is almost 20 years. I think it had the stench of that relationship on it to some degree. It was one of those things where if I heard the title, I thought "I like that movie, but she did too.." in a sort of negative way. Maybe you know what I mean. I have no ill will toward her, if you're wondering. We still talk occasionally and I would consider her a pretty close friend (despite rarely talking these days). It's just one of those things that has that era smothering it in my mind. BUT HEY! I watched it again and none of that ruined it for me.
It was funny to see how much of the music I remembered, how many little things the characters would do that I knew were coming but still tickled me somehow. The acting in this movie is great. The plot is kind of silly and naive, but the acting and FUN way they pull it together makes that ok. You can watch this movie and, though it's a bit saccharine in places, still find yourself getting swept up in what is happening. It's a bit more comedy than romance, but it definitely has a bizarre little romance in it. This movie is truly peak Kidman.
Recommended?
Yeah, it's still good. I enjoyed it quite a bit.
