I've known OF this movie for a long time but never got around to watching it. I went into this blind, not knowing anything about it other than people said it was good and funny. IS IT THOUGH?
This too is based on a book that I've never read. The plot made very little sense to me. At the end, I had trouble figuring out why it existed as it seemingly had no real beginning or end. What was the point? I don't really know. Maybe the book has more details that color this story a bit more, but what I saw in the movie itself was lacking.
The cast was really solid. It's hard not to be good when you have Paul Giamatti, isn't it? The leads (David and John) were fine. Amy was cute but didn't have much screen time. Bark Lee was great. And you have Sergeant Zim from Starship Troopers!? Pretty good stuff if I do say so myself.
The pacing is interesting because this is one of those zigzag "now, then, now" sort of movies. They're in the present, then the past, then the present, then the past. It's not exactly confusing, but it wasn't very engaging. There were interesting pieces to the movie, but moving between tenses made it feel jerky and inconsistent. Maybe that's part of the appeal to some.
I recognize this has a cult following, but it's not quite for me. I found the story unsatisfying, like I was fed cotton candy for dinner when I wanted real food. I probably wanted to like it more than I did, especially considering the cast.
Recommended?
Nope.
