I'm shocked I haven't mini-reviewed this one yet. I remember the first time I saw this, I went in totally blind. It's really best to go in not knowing anything about it SO I will try to keep this VERY high level. Will that make a good review? Probably not.
From a pacing perspective, this movie is only 1 hour 34 minutes, so it's RIGHT UP MY ALLEY. None of it really drags, although there are some parts that are repeated so you can get some clues I guess? They probably didn't need to do that.
Casting is pretty good overall. There's not a ton of dialogue, but there is a lot of visible emotion on their faces. There's also a special cameo by Ti West, who you may know from such movies as The House of the Devil, X, or Pearl. The real gem is Sharni Vinson, which sounds like some sort of weird psychological method but is actually her real name. She's Aussie and they have weird names. She's great, both in dialogue AND emotion.
This movie feels both familiar and fresh. It has many elements from a specific sub-genre of horror that you've no doubtedly seen before, but it has so much to it that elevates it beyond a mere clone. It's a breath of fresh air, really. With all the violence and scares, it also has a layer of humor over it with some amazing one liners. I can't write them here or you'll know some stuff, so I guess you'll have to take my word for it.
Recommended?
Yes. It had been years since I last watched it, and I forgot a bunch of what happens in the inbetween areas.
