I thought I had seen this before but I think I only saw parts of it. I didn't remember anything about it if I DID see it at some point.
This movie is interesting in concept, but given the runtime, I think it runs out of steam in the 2nd act. I think this movie and concept is ubiquitous enough that I'm not going to spoil anything here, but it starts to fall off when they shift to the TV side of the story. I don't care about any of that. It was more interesting when he started to see the cracks in the façade of their stage/set. And what was with the stupid kangol hat on Ed Harris? Terrible.
Acting was great outside of ONE person in particular: Sylvia. She was clearly English and trying to do an American accent that wasn't working. Her R's dropped in unnatural ways, particularly for the "Hollywood" location of this movie and her apparent hometown. It gave off some vaguely Boston vibes, but only in R's. I DON'T LIKE IT. The other actors were portraying actors and doing a particular sort of style, so I'm fine with it. Laura Linney was probably the highlight of this movie.
Because this movie starts to go into another view of the story in the 2nd half, it really slows the pacing down. And while the ending is meant to be super dramatic, it felt a bit long. The audience reactions throughout were all pretty cheesy, but the ending ones really took the cake. Woof. Cool to see Sculley there, though I guess.
Recommended?
Sure. You probably know what happens, but it's entertaining anyway.
