It's been years since I last saw this movie, and though I remember not really being super big on it, I remember enjoying it anyway. I'm currently in my "show my kids these stupid movies" phase before they move out, so expect MORE OF THIS. They like the comedy-horror movies the most, LIKE MOST PEOPLE, so this was an obvious choice.

Many horror movies are formulaic. We've all seen movies like Scream where they break down the mistakes people make, only to make those same mistakes themselves. This movie takes it in a different direction where everything is orchestrated from an underground lair sort of thing. It's all very professional! You even start the movie focused on those guys, specifically Richard Jenkins (aka Dr Doback from Step Brothers) and Bradley Whitford (aka Jake's dad from Brooklyn 99). Knowing that they're orchestrating things doesn't spoil the movie, although you do know generally how things will turn out.

Pacing is pretty good because the movie clocks in at 95 minutes. It kind of has two mini movies in one to some extent. There's the overall movie with the whole puppeteering bit and the mini horror movie about teens in a cabin as the secondary movie. The secondary movie is extremely predictable and not that good, but it only lasts for like half the movie. One of those teens is Thor! Possibly before he was Thor? It doesn't matter, he's still Thor.

I think my favorite part of this movie is seeing the options they can choose from in terms of their own demise. It's a nice callback to a ton of other horror movies and I appreciate that. Every rewatch I hope for the puzzle box.

If you haven't seen it and enjoy some meta/comedy horror, watch it.
