It took a few weeks, but we finished the original Turtles movie series. Where 1 was a bit too serious, 2 hit the sweet spot of totally goofy and fun. The question now is: where does 3 stack up!?
Before I get into that, I want to go back to a time when I was a kid and this was new. I remember having toys that were modeled after the samurai turtles, including having the scepter. I haven't looked for them to see what they go for these days, but I remember absolutely loving them. And for some reason I really liked this movie as a kid. I think it was the magic of old Japan, samurais, and obviously the turtles.
As an adult going back, this movie is ROUGH. It plays some parts a bit too seriously, but it has a lot of the goofy spirit of the 2nd movie. The problem is that they went even more slapstick and added in really stupid noises during fight scenes. Why? It seems inevitable that the 3rd one would just be kind of bad, so I'm not surprised. I'm just kind of baffled about some of the choices they made.
They gave the turtles all these weird spots this time and even mentioned it in the movie. I don't know what the purpose of making them so .. standout? was. They were there in the others but no where near as obvious. It was strange. Maybe it was the way it was filmed and they were actually the same costumes. Who knows. The eye holes for the actors seemed larger too, to the point that it was very noticeable.
Casey Jones makes a cameo more or less. He's not REALLY in the movie. Instead, you get to see the actor in another role in Japan. His character sucks and has barely any lines. April also sucks in this one. She's so abrasive. And why is there a subplot with a little kid?!
If nothing else, this has made me MUCH more excited to see the 2007 animated movie.
Recommended?
No. It's a bad movie. It's goofy still, but it's not entertaining enough. I felt like turning it off a few times.
