Donnie Wahlberg looks kind of like Stephen Graham. I think that's what I took from this movie.
I wasn't a fan of Saw, so it makes sense that I would continue on to Saw II right? There's a lot of the same in this movie, but there's also some "world building" around the Jigsaw character as well. Is it GOOD world building? Eh, it's probably a better story than the first, but I don't know if I'd say it's good.
Let me switch gears for a minute to say I'm glad Beverly Mitchell got to expand her acting beyond Seventh Heaven only to die in this movie. Spoiler I guess, but you knew it was coming if you saw her name in the credits. The cast is not good in this. Donnie Wahlberg is a poor actor. There's still a ton of screaming and yelling in this movie, just like the first. Not only that, but there are SO MANY jump cuts. This movie is the visual equivalent to listening to song in your car only to have an obnoxious, SUPER LOUD douche drive by every few seconds.
My big problem with this movie (and probably this franchise) is that it's not scary. It doesn't even try to be scary. It's more of a torture sort of thing. Torture with a message in this case (although the message is stupid). I think the idea is that you sort of feel for the Jigsaw killer and what he's trying to do while simultaneously enjoy bad people getting bad things done to them. But I'm not a sadist like Arch Hall Jr. It does nothing for me.
Recommended?
If you liked Saw, sure. Otherwise, no.
