The last time I saw this movie, I was probably 15. I was pretty much going in blind, but I did remember a couple parts here and there. Let's just assume this is a "NEW [to me] MOVIE REVIEW" ok?
I'm not sure what the official blurb is for this movie, but I'd put it like this: a romance novelist ends up in her own weird action/adventure romance novel come-to-life. Her hero? Michael Douglas before all of his oral care got him into a tongue cancer situation! HERO to HPV. Tale as old as time. Oh, and the novelist is Kathleen Turner, who is like the 80s version of Maggie Gyllenhaal.
There are a ton of famous people that pop up in this movie, and the acting is actually pretty good despite the built-in cheese of the movie itself. It plays it that way and wants to be cheesy, so don't get mad at me for saying that. For the most part, it works. It plays out like a schlocky Indiana Jones in some ways. The action is pretty ..ok? Although the shooting scenes are hilariously bad. It's very much like that fake movie in Home Alone. KEEP THE CHANGE, YA FILTHY ANIMAL.
My biggest complaint with this movie is the soundtrack. Dear lord is it awful. It's so 80s in the worst possible way. Terrible synths, really obnoxious fake drums, and in most of the scenes, it takes away from the movie in a big way. Think of how the soundtrack to Indiana Jones is timeless and classic. Contemporary soundtracks are such an easy way to date your movie and make it too "of the time" for some folks.
Recommended?
I'm going with a soft yes. It's a pretty good movie despite the corniness and horrendous score/soundtrack.
