Rob Zombie. Love him or hate him, he's made quite a few movies by this point and this one is a remake of a classic.
This movie really is a "what happens when you take Rob Zombie's style/dialogue and put it into the Halloween universe?" It's EXACTLY what you expect. Lots of trailer folk. Lots of swearing. Throw in some pointless backstory that humanizes Michael (.. why?), and you've got yourself this little number.
The first time I saw this, I hated it so much. I can't remember how long ago it was, but it had to be in like 2008 or so that I saw it. H2 did NOT come out yet at that point. I was certainly confused by the choices he made. Guess what, I still am!
What is the purpose of setting this movie in 1990 and then 2005? Did we need a "modern" version of it at that point? From about halfway in, the movie basically follows the original Halloween story. There's not much deviation in it, and it's kind of funny to see the creepiness that made the original be rushed in this one. But at least we got 40 minutes of Michael as a kid and mental patient before that, right?
The usual cast of characters is here. We all know Zombie loves his wife. She's Michael's mom. She is .. the same character she always plays. Bill Mosely is in it. Danny Trejo. Brad Dourif. Danielle Harris. Clint Howard. Malcolm McDowell. William Forsythe. Udo Kier. Sid Haig. Dee Wallace. Mickey Dolenz. Adrienne Barbeau. So many famous people. Such typical Rob Zombie movie output.
One thing that Zombie loves doing that I absolutely HATE is the shakey cam cut-cut-cut thing. There's no reason for it. It's impossible to follow along with what's happening. It does feel very "of the time" when I look back at these types of horror movies.
I gave this a second chance because I thought "maybe I was too harsh on it back then." But no, I dont think I was. I'll still check out H2 because I never watched that.
Recommended?
Nope. It's a sort of pointless entry if you ask me.
