Who knows how many times I've seen this at this point. It was one of those movies that was on a lot in the mid-2000s, especially as a background noise sort of movie. It's kind of funny that I've seen it so often but probably wouldn't list it as one of my favorites. Why not!? LET'S FIND OUT!
I actually have no major issues with this movie. The cast is good and this is Vince Vaughn in the earlier part of his peak career. '03 was Old School, this was '04 along with Anchorman, Wedding Crashers in '05, The Breakup in '06, Into the Wild and Fred Claus in '07, Four Christmases in '08, Couples Retreat in '09... I mean he had a good run there. But looking back on it, I think this might be one of the weaker ones in the list in terms of his performance. We also have Christine Taylor with Ben Stiller. Justin Long as a sort of twink cheerleader? Rip Torn as a weird urine-drinking coach. Stephen Root, Alan Tudyk as a .. pirate?! Justin Bateman as an oddball ESPN Ocho color commentator. You get the idea.
The story to this movie is pretty dumb and a bit of a retread of what always happens in these types of movies. Douchey rich guy wants to take over the little guys. Little guys band together to try to stop it. Nothing new to see. The difference is in the characters themselves and the goofy people involved.
I think my biggest problem with this movie is that it's not as funny as it should be given who is in it. VV plays the same character he always plays, so I expect that. But Ben Stiller overacts in this to a degree that's almost annoying. The Pirate character still makes absolutely no sense to me. It seems to be there for the zaniness of it but contextually it makes no sense and it really doesn't add anything. Justin Long's character is probably the best one in it. I did laugh at Christine Taylor's character quirk.
Recommended?
No, but it's not a bad movie. There's nothing in this movie that you can't find somewhere else done better.
