What I DID know coming in: "it's not a slasher!"
What I did NOT know coming in: everything else.
I kind of wish I had known it was by the guy who did Barbarian... BIG SIGH HERE.
Let's go with the positives first. It had a lot of well known people and even had a nice June Diane Raphael cameo which was fun. It does these character perspective bits to piece the story together which I liked. I thought the overlap was odd at first, but it made sense as it went along. It also had a super WEIRD vibe going for at least the first half of the movie. Despite this movie being kinda-sorta about kids, they weren't really in it too much which I appreciated.
For a bit there, it really felt menacing. It felt like there was so much mystery and confusion about why things were happening, almost helpless.
But then.. how do I put this? SIMILAR to Barbarian, the tone changes in the second half. Though it doesn't do quite such a hard turn as Barbarian does, it makes the movie feel a bit less sinister and creepy, leaning more into a comedy-adjacent witch sort of movie. The climax of this movie absolutely ruined the rest of it for me. I laughed out loud at how dumb it was. Had they stopped it just a couple minutes earlier, it would've been a pretty solid movie. Maybe even a 6! But the way it ended dropped it down to a 4 for me.
AND HEY, I like witch movies generally, but this witch wasn't hitting the right notes for me unfortunately. Such is life.
Recommended?
No.
