Ah, the movie that was supposed to kick off the Dark Carnival! Wait, that's ICP. The DARK UNIVERSE! What I knew coming in was that this movie bombed overall and caused the cancellation of a "Dark Universe" for Universal. Which sucks, by the way. I like a lot of those old Universal monster movies. But then again...
This movie is not as BAD as I thought it was going to be. My expectations were so low that it probably helped a bit, but the story is not really anything like the Mummy that you'd expect. It's a little too high-tech, military-oriented for me. Tom Cruise is good, though. Russell Crowe is pretty good, too. There's something about Imhotep that I really miss, though, whether it's Knockoff Billy Zane (Arnold Vosloo) or Boris Karloff. I'm not entirely sure what they were trying to do with the ending of this movie, either. Is it meant to setup some sort of sequel? Did they want to do something "new" without thinking of how it played? I don't know.
Recommended?
Hmmmm, probably not. It's not bad by any means, but it's also not interesting enough to recommend. I'll probably forget I even watched it in 2 months.
