Here's another one I haven't seen in SOME TIME. I had a friend growing up who was really into black media in general, so I was exposed to a lot of that stuff early on. This movie was no exception! I remember watching it at his house while his dad was out at the bar. Then he'd stumble in at like 2am and trip on us while we slept on the floor. Pretty cool.
That aside, I don't think I'm the target demographic for this movie. This is theoretically a horror anthology, but it's not really scary at all. It's incredibly corny and the special effects are laughable. At the heart of it, you have some social statements wrapped in a horror façade.
The overarching story is kind of predictable, especially as they creep toward the inevitable conclusion. The three gang members are fine until it comes to them having to act scared, then they fall apart. The main funeral director guy is absurd and over the top.
I'll boil down what the "horror" is to each of the stories and give you the social statement around it. You can decide if that's interesting to you. The first story revolves around corrupt cops and the horror is a ghost. The second story is about domestic violence and the horror is magical drawings + paper. The third story is about a racist senator and the horror is .. dolls. The fourth story is about a gang member and his various "sins" with the horror being the mental aspect of replaying what you've done.
It's not for me.
Recommended?
No. It's not good as a horror movie and I'm not the right audience for the social messages, particularly the gang-related stuff.
