I had multiple people tell me to watch this, only saying "it's weird." That can mean a lot of different things.
I thought Jesse Plemons was good, although there's something about him that's odd. He's a good actor and maybe this role fit how I view him more than it should've. Emily Stone was good too. I was surprised to see Stavros in here, but he was actually quite good as a cop and former babysitter/molestor(?). There's an implication...
While I went in knowing nothing, I also didn't find this movie all that weird for some reason. About 30 minutes or so in, I started to believe the Plemons character about what he had discovered. They play this "will they, won't they" sort of game with it, but it always felt like it was going to be true. There was a lot of silliness that I've definitely seen similar wackiness from people on the internet. Conspiracy theories and whatnot. I can't say more without giving anything away.
As I said, I didn't really find this movie to be that weird. Unfortunately, I also didn't find it very entertaining. After the watch, I did a quick look-up on Wikipedia to see what genre(s) it was. It's listed as a black comedy thriller. I don't know if it really fits those labels very well. I didn't find it funny, nor did I find it very thriller-y. It felt restrained if anything. The stakes all felt very low the entire time.
This movie, to me, is like getting a store brand pretzel when you really just want an Auntie Anne's.
Recommended?
No. I wonder what it says about me that people have recommended this to me because it fell QUITE FLAT.
