Event Horizon has all the elements of a great movie: the cast is phenomenal, the story is mysterious and tense, the setting is isolating and cruel… yet somehow it always falls flat. On paper, this movie should be a solid 10 for me, but every time I watch it, I find new ways to be disappointed. While the actors are great individually, the acting itself is somehow unenthusiastic and too mellow, yet also somehow too over-the-top. The way it’s edited made it feel a bit cheesy as well – think odd slow-motion scenes in areas that don’t need it. Lighting in this movie is off as well. It seems like it’s trying to balance dark and mysterious with “scary” but leans too much on flickering and strobing lights that don’t deliver anything other than annoyance. I wish this movie were better.

Have you seen it? If so, you know what you’re getting. Otherwise, I think you’re probably ok to skip it. Maybe watch it once just to know what the hype is about.
